Distributions of Peak Flux and Duration for Gamma-ray Bursts

چکیده

Many of the important conclusions about Gamma-Ray Bursts follow from the distributions of various quantities such as peak ux or duration. We show that for astrophysical transients such as bursts, multiple selection thresholds can lead to various forms of data truncation, which can strongly aaect the distributions obtained from the data if not accounted for properly. Thus the data should be considered to form a multivariate distribution. We also caution that if the variables forming the multivariate distribution are not statistically independent of each other, further biases can result. A general method is described to properly account for these eeects, and as a speciic example we extract the distributions of ux and duration from the BATSE 3B Gamma-Ray Burst data. It is shown that properly accounting for the aforementioned biases tends to increase the slope of the log N-log S relation at low values of S, and dramatically increases the number of short duration bursts.

A New Approach to Statistics of Cosmological Gamma-Ray Bursts

We use a new method of analysis to determine parameters of cosmological gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), assuming that their distribution follows the star-formation history of the universe. Spectral evolution is calculated from the fireball/blast wave model, and used to evaluate the measured peak flux, duration, and νFν peak photon energy for a GRB source occuring at a given redshift and with given val...

Constraints on the Redshift and Luminosity Distributions of Gamma Ray Bursts in an Einstein-de Sitter Universe

Two models of the gamma ray burst population, one with a standard candle luminosity and one with a power law luminosity distribution, are χ-fitted to the union of two data sets: the differential number versus peak flux distribution of BATSE’s long duration bursts, and the time dilation and energy shifting versus peak flux information of pulse duration time dilation factors, interpulse duration ...

Intensity Distribution and Luminosity Function of the Swift Gamma-Ray Bursts

Using the sample of long Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by Swift-BAT before June 2007, we measure the cumulative distribution of the peak photon fluxes (logN–logP ) of the Swift bursts. Compared with the BATSE sample, we find that the two distributions are consistent after correcting the band pass difference, suggesting that the two instruments are sampling the same population of bursts. We a...

Afterglow Emission from Naked Gamma-ray Bursts

We calculate the afterglow emission for Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) going off in an extremely low density medium, referred to as naked bursts. Our results also apply to the case where the external medium density falls off sharply at some distance from the burst. The observed afterglow flux in this case originates at high latitudes, i.e. where the angle between the fluid velocity and the observer li...
